Halloween Party with the Sugar Thieves

You don’t want to miss this Halloween party, hosted by the ever-popular Sugar Thieves!

The Sugar Thieves have been winning fans over worldwide with their high energy, soulful live shows since 2006. Over the years they have honed their brand of American roots music, creating a sound that is all their own. Moving between blues, country, folk, gospel, rock and roll, and elements of jazz, freely they honor the tradition that makes American music so great. From smokey dive bars to big festival stages, this band has what it takes to move the people.

The Sugar Thieves call Phoenix Arizona home, but over the past eight years they have made their presence known all over the US, Mexico, and Europe. The Sugar Thieves have shared a bill with the likes of Taj Mahal, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, The Flaming Lips, The Blues Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Robert Cray, and more. They’ve recorded and produced five albums, each containing a variety of original music, and old songs reinvented. Also, their rendition of “Santa Baby” was featured on Putamayo’s Acoustic Christmas Album in 2013.

The Sugar Thieves

In trying to describe The Sugar Thieves’ sound, it only makes sense to call it good old American roots music. American music has always been a melting pot of styles including blues, jazz, country, folk, gospel, and rock and roll. All of these genres describe sounds that move us, and The Sugar Thieves blend all of these influences to create a sound that moves audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Their goal is to share their passion for great songs with the audience by exhibiting high energy showmanship and raw emotion with every performance. Firmly rooted in the blues, the Sugar Thieves have a love for all things Americana. On any given night the band will mix original songs with American covers spanning the last 120 years.

The Sugar Thieves started as a Duo in 2006, consisting of Meridith Moore’s deep and colorful vocals, and Mikel Lander’s gritty and gutsy guitar picking style, and vocal approach. Today they are backed by the most talented rhythm section west of the Mississippi.

Todd Chuba on drums boasts a thirty-year career in music and has shared a stage with the likes of Glen Campbell, and David Grisman. He is a wall of sound behind the kit and embraces perfection in his approach to each and every tune. Shea Marshall, on plenty of instruments including keys, sax, harmonica, and even railroad spikes, has been with The Sugar Thieves since their very first concert. He is well known for his uniquely universal and ecumenical approach to instruments and styles. Jeff Naylor on upright and electric balls is a force to reckon with. His expressive showmanship and hard playing capture any audience. He also compliments the band with backup vocals. Together, The Sugar Thieves are an uplifting, and unforgettable musical experience.

Join us for a Celebration of Julie Perkins Life

We hope that you can join us on Thursday, April 7 from 2 to 4 pm.  Most locals knew Julie, she was a bit of a fixture in Jerome.  Sometimes seen smoking a cigarette while seated on the metal bench in front of the Connor Hotel.  Many stories abound and we hope that you can make some time and share your Julie Perkins story with us.

“I remember a time when I was hosting open mic and would be opening the evening, playing a few tunes on my piano.  Julie loved the sound of the piano and was hoping to show up for the first bit of open mic.  She reminded me, however, that no proper lady would enter a bar alone, so I would need to arrange an escort to walk her in to the Spirit Room.  She will be missed.”

Julie Perkins Obituary

Tall, slim, reminiscent of Lauren Bacall, Julie Vihel Perkins had her own distinct wit, total recall of old Arizona lineage and an incomparable flair!

She is no more……..Room #1, on reserve for her at the Connor Hotel is now available. The Jerome Fire Chief won’t need to take her to the station in the hot summer to get her into the air conditioning, she has moved on, the Verde Valley is missing an icon. She died right around happy hour on Thursday October 21, 2021, after suffering a stroke.

Born at the old St. Josephs Hospital in Phoenix, because on April 7, 1940 the city of Tempe had no hospital, Julie grew up on 5th Street in Tempe, under the shadow of the Tempe Buttes. After graduating from Tempe Union High School, a proud Buffalo, she was elected Arizona Jr. Miss and represented our state in the Azalea Festival in Mississippi, where she won the title of Miss Congeniality! Julie attended university in Hawaii and Mexico City.

She returned to her home state where she married well and often and raised her children, daughter Liesl and son Matthew.

Julie had an eye for detail, a penchant for education, and a charitable heart. Instrumental in founding Hospice of the Valley with many in her tennis group and often flying mercy health missions to the Navajo reservation, her competency and compassion were a part of her being, along with a quick wit, total recall, and the ability to upon occasion, swear like a sailor!

In last chapter of her life she moved from Paradise Valley to the Verde Valley and took up residence in the town of Jerome in the charming home left to her by her Grandmother. Her friends in Jerome became a part of her family, and were special to her.

She is survived by her children: Liesl (Robert) Bogar, Matthew (Susan) Veazey, and grandchildren, Nate, Riley, Emma, Helen and Eli. Her brothers Dick and Mike (Jennifer) and sister Pamela Vihel.

We are excited to begin the rollout of our new Spirit Room website.  Our old hosting provider had sold to another, lower quality hosting provider so it seemed like a good time to begin changing things up!  Towards that end, we will be selling Spirit Room T’s on this website very soon.  We’ve secured the website, now it’s time to hook up our merchant account, take some photos of Sam & friend in Women’s & Men’s Style Spirit Room T’s, then get them up placed in our online shop.

We’re also pleased to have spotted a wonderful exterior photograph of the Spirit Room by Tim Medora Photography.  We reached out to him and he agreed to let us use his image with a photo credit.  Thanks so much Tim!

In the meantime, browse our music calendar and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Stay safe out there!
